Simcha FAQ

1. What is a Shira simcha?

Shira is an inclusive Orthodox minyan in Melbourne where both women and men are active participants.

A Shira simcha is like no other. Our services are filled with song, meaningful sermons, and attention to the individual and family. Whether it’s a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, a wedding call-up, or a baby-naming ceremony, we want your landmark celebration to be a relevant and memorable occasion for you and those close to you.

Here are some practical things you need to know; if you have any questions, please contact us.

2. What are the Costs of a Shira simcha?

The cost of a simcha at Shira depends on the size of your simcha.

Please bear in mind that the you must be a shul member to hold your simcha at Shira. In the case of a Bat or Bar Mitzvah, we ask that at least one parent be a member, as well as the celebrating child. Visit our membership page here to join the Shira community.

As part of the simcha, it is customary to provide a kiddush, which must be certified kosher. We can help you organise this.

3. What if my simcha is particularly large?

Due to size constraints, if you expect more than 70 guests, you will need to have your kiddush in the adjacent Theodor Herzl Club hall. The Herzl Club charges $1200 for this.

4. What about preparing for a Bat or Bar Mitzvah?

We can prepare you or your child for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Similarly, if you would like to learn for any other occasion, please contact us and we can help you prepare.  At Shira, we encourage you and other family members to participate in the formal side of your simcha.

To be Bnei Mitzvah, your child must be Jewish and over the age of 13 for boys and 12 for girls.
